Content Stolen from iOSDeveloperTips.com – Week of Feb 20

Update: Bluehost.com has acted quickly and suspended the site avatar-app.com. Thank you Bluehost for your quick response.

If you are reading this on any website other than iOSDeveloperTips.com (or iPhoneDeveloperTips.com), you are viewing content that has been stolen without permission…

One continual frustation I’ve had over the past few years is dealing with the people who copy content from this blog and copy/paste onto their own blog/website, taking full credit for the content.

If you’ve ever written content for the benefit of the community, asking nothing in return, you have an appreciation for how frustrating this is. It really makes one question whether it is worth the effort to continue coming up with ideas, creating code examples and responding to questions, only to have all the content lifted without permission, and scattered about on the Internet.

Filling out DMCA forms for every violation is becoming a very time consuming task. Running out of options, I’ve decided to list, on a weekly basis, any and all new copyright thefts and the relevant hosting company. If nothing else, for those who lift the content directly through automated tools, the headline “Content Stolen from iOSDeveloperTips.com” should make for an interesting post on their site.

If I can ask a favor, please let me know if you ever find content from this site on another website or blog.

Okay, on with the list of sites that I’ve found this week:

  1. Sorry to hear about this – it is very frustrating when people take your content so blatantly. Please do keep up the good writing – it has been tremendous help for me. Personally I use your RSS feed to get to your site – and I doubt that any of these sites will have a good following on either twitter or RSS.

  2. I’m really sorry about this.

I did not know any of these pages, but clearly they lack ethics

Thanks for your work, for me as a developer is essential

  3. I’ll also want to thank you, very much, for your work.

I know that if you are like me, these little thefts, added one to another, might make you reconsider your continuos efforts… But also that, if you are like me, our thanks might lift your spirit a little bit (at least I hope so).

I’ve been reading your posts for quite a time now (I follow you through your RSS) and be sure that you have helped me to change some of my bad habits and, even more often, you have taught me a lot of things I didn’t know were possible to do. Thank you for all that.

Finally, I have a question I hope you can answer: I also have a website with a lot of free content (I’m the webmaster of one of my university’s sites) and am curious to know how did you find out about these violations. I’m only using Google Analytics. Would that be enough? Thank you in advance.

    • Thank you, it does help to know that people appreciate the effort to keep the blog going…

As far as how to find the hijackers – often times readers will let me know (many thanks to readers who have help in this regard). I will also bump into my content on another site when searching on Google. Copyscape.com is also a helpful resource to find scrapers.

Thanks again and good luck with you site.

  4. I can understand how it feels when you work hard on creating good tutorials/articles and others just copy and cash on your hard work.

Good to see that their accounts got suspended.

  5. SO frustrating. I’m glad you’re calling these people out. I actually referenced an article of yours recently on my blog, but of course gave you full credit :) Thank you for all the great work you do!

  6. Ugh, that’s horrible. Sorry you have to deal with that, but I suppose it means your content is just that valuable :) You’re doing great work here, it’s definitely appreciated by many of us in the community!

  7. The solution is rather easy: add reference to your website in any post you make. So, if they copy your article automatically, it’s free publicity. Maybe even drop a link there, most probably this dumb idiots don’t use nofollow ;)

  8. I found your site just as I started learning to develop for the iPad. Your work is priceless and very iomportant. Please keep writing.

  9. Grim Situation… This is the whole internet marketing mentality. Turning the whole web into a crap marketing tool for people who want to make a quick coin by getting to the top of googles search list by stealing peoples work without doing any work themselves.

Thanks for the great tips and samples.. I found here really useful as I was starting to learn iOS development.

I pick it up through .rss feed as well.

  10. Hi,

I have the same issue, specifically with ios-dot-biomsoft-dot-com. They stole — amongst tons of other stuff — my complete content from my rombosblog.wordpress.com and published it 1:1 w/o any reference.
I contacted already the corresponding hoster (of course the site owner itself does not respond to e-mail :-( ). Since the site has no proper “Impressum”, which is required for sites being hosted in Germany (as in this case), I am sure I will easily find a lawyer keen on getting some money out of this.

We should also try to inform the press or popular development sites to write something about this and make this kind of fraud more public.

    Regards, Hans-Juergen

  11. I once had a popular blog and discovered that some kind of bots were stealing my content, posting it to auto-generated blogs, and peppering my stolen articles with links to porn. Designed to make money for thieves who stole my content. Very upsetting. Hope you get justice.
